Collective Worship – Ash Wednesday

Today St Mary Magdalene Primary School reflected upon Ash Wednesday during our Collective Worship. Ash Wednesday is a Christian holy day of prayer, fasting, and repentance. It is preceded by Shrove Tuesday and falls on the first day of Lent, the six weeks of penitence before Easter.

Show the Love – The Climate Coalition

Children in Year 6 have had a really focussed topic time on their project entitled ‘Save our World’. This was inspired by an international project about Climate Change called The Climate Coalition (#showthelove) and links to  Goal 13: Climate Action from God’s Global Goals.

Climate change is a real and undeniable threat to our entire civilization. The effects are already visible and will be catastrophic unless we act now.Through education, innovation and adherence to our climate commitments, we can make the necessary changes to protect the planet.

These changes also provide huge opportunities to modernize our infrastructure which will create new jobs and promote greater prosperity across the globe.

Getting Started:

We began the project by looking into Global warming and its effect on our world which lead us nicely onto endangered animals and how climate change is affecting them. We chose the polar bear to concentrate on and children researched and produced some fantastic non-chronological reports. At the same time, we added to this by doing some art of the other animals that are at risk.

We watched the video from the following website in Collective Worship with the whole school: https://www.theclimatecoalition.org/show-the-love and shared our thoughts and findings.  We encouraged members of our school family to take action.

Letter to local MP:

Finally, we took it upon ourselves to produce leaflets to inform other schools of the huge problems with plastic and a small group decided to voice their concerns and pitch a plan of action for it to our local MP – Harriet Harman. These motivated children wrote letters to her and are now awaiting her response. Wish us all the best for ‘Project Plastic!’

Award Winning Poet Visit

Award-winning poet James Carter was a popular visitor to SMMS .  He joined us during Book Week where he gave poetry (with music) performances and workshops to inspire both the children and staff.

Each class enjoyed Collective Worship and a poetry writing session where they were able to be creative and have fun with words.  We finished the day with a whole school inspiring poetry performance.  Kareem from Year 6 said ‘I found the Collective Worship and workshops intriguing. My mind got lost into it all!!’

To bring book Week to a close, we performed some of our favourite poems to the school during Collective Worship.  Some made us laugh, some made us stop and reflect!!  Thank you to everyone who made this year’s Book Week great!!

Here are a couple of our amazing poems written by the children during a workshop with James. To listen, press play.
